Nagpur Civic Body Targets ₹749 Crore Property Tax for FY27

NAGPUR: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has set a property tax collection target of ₹749.82 crore for 2026-27. However, a significant discrepancy in its figures has emerged — ₹1,392 crore in arrears has been excluded from the recovery plan. Data obtained by TOI reveals that the total property tax arrears amount to ₹1,919 crore, but the NMC has only incorporated ₹526.85 crore — just 27% of the entire backlog — in this year’s recovery target. The exclusion of ₹1,392 crore greatly reduces the scope of the initiative. Senior officials have stated that arrears from government properties, mobile towers, and ongoing…

Nagpur: Just 15% of DP-2000 Public Reservations Implemented in 25 Years

NAGPUR: The Existing Land Use (ELU) assessment by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation highlights significant flaws in urban planning in Maharashtra’s second-largest city. Over the past 25 years, only 15% of the 893 proposed reservations under the city’s Development Plan (DP)-2000 have been executed. Out of the 138 developed reservations, 556 remain unutilized, while 199 intended for public amenities have been impacted by encroachments, which were later regularized via Gunthewari layouts. The findings will inform the upcoming revised Development Plan for Nagpur, raising concerns about how the city’s planning framework has largely remained theoretical for decades. According to officials, many reservations…

Court backs Nagpur civic body’s eviction on Subhash Road land

NAGPUR: The District Judge-6 has affirmed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) eviction action concerning a valuable 15,000 sq m land parcel located on Subhash Road near Agyaram Devi square, dismissing eight miscellaneous civil appeals against the civic body’s eviction notices. The appeals, including MCA No. 271/2025 and related cases, contested NMC’s eviction proceedings initiated under Section 81-B of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, 1949. The disputed land was originally leased to the Abhyankar Smarak Trust in 1937 for charitable purposes. In issuing the ruling, Judge MS Ganorkar noted that the lease had expired in November 1967 and was never renewed.…

Nagpur’s Eco-Friendly Property Scheme Adoption Below 1%

NAGPUR: Despite a consistent increase in participation, a significant concern arises — out of Nagpur’s nearly 8.38 lakh properties, only 4,488 have embraced eco-friendly practices under the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) ecological rebate program, resulting in adoption rates below 1% across all zones. This disparity underscores ongoing issues such as low awareness, high initial costs, and limited enforcement, hindering broader participation even with tax incentives. The ecological rebate initiative — which encompasses rainwater harvesting, rooftop solar installations, vermicomposting/organic waste management, and wastewater recycling — has begun to gain traction. Data from the property tax department reveals that 3,513 properties benefited…

Property tax dues at ₹2,000 crore: One-third of Nagpur’s budget

NAGPUR: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is grappling with Rs1,919 crore in unpaid property taxes, highlighting significant revenue recovery issues, with 4.54 lakh properties currently defaulting on payments—some for over 25 years. This unpaid tax represents almost one-third of NMC’s proposed budget of Rs5,857 crore for the fiscal year 2026-27. The magnitude of this default isn’t simply a recent occurrence; it reflects a long-standing systemic issue. Data indicates that Rs1,227 crore, approximately 64% of the total arrears, comes from properties that have neglected their taxes for 11 to 25 years. An additional Rs473 crore is owed by defaulters from the…

3.76 Lakh Owners Skip Property Tax, Nagpur’s Finances Suffer

NAGPUR: The property tax revenue of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has seen a decline in 2025-26, despite a continuous increase in the number of properties, highlighting serious compliance and recovery issues. To date, the NMC has collected Rs252.66 crore, a marked decrease from Rs306 crore gathered in 2024-25, where they achieved 94% of their Rs325 crore target. This reduction comes even with the total property count rising to 836,842, indicating that revenue growth is lagging behind property expansion. Alarmingly, only 460,094 property owners have settled their taxes, leaving 376,000 properties either in default or outside the tax system. Property…

Land Use Survey Delays Nagpur Development Plan Progress

NAGPUR: The long-delayed development plan (DP) for Nagpur has encountered yet another challenge, with the Existing Land Use (ELU) survey yet to be completed in over half of the newly designated municipal areas. Out of 57 mauzas involved, the town planning department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has only finalized ELUs for 25 mauzas, leaving 32 still incomplete, well past the previous deadline. Civic officials indicate that the delay is largely due to difficulties in acquiring and reconciling land-use data from the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), responsible for the city’s previous development plan. Sources within the NMC mentioned that…
