Maharashtra Invests ₹30 Crore in Metro Phase-II, Total at ₹607 Crore

NAGPUR: The Maharashtra government has allocated an additional ₹30 crore towards its equity contribution for the Nagpur Metro Phase-2 project. This brings the state’s total equity contribution to ₹607 crore, which constitutes over 60% of its committed share of ₹998.20 crore, following the recent approval by the urban development department.

This recent allocation is part of the state’s commitment under a tripartite agreement signed in September 2023 with the Centre, the Maharashtra government, and the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro).

The government document indicates that the ₹30 crore has been released as an unconditional equity contribution from the 2026-27 budget set aside for the project.

With this release, the state’s total equity contribution has risen from ₹577 crore to ₹607 crore. Previous disbursements included ₹40 crore in October 2023, ₹100 crore and ₹60 crore in 2024, along with ₹90 crore, ₹227 crore, and ₹60 crore in 2025. The state still needs to release the remaining ₹391.20 crore of its pledged equity.

The latest equity release comes at a time when Nagpur Metro Phase-2 is gaining momentum. The project encompasses a 43.8-km network with 32 stations across four corridors, connecting Kanhan, Hingna, MIDC ESR, and Transport Nagar, at an estimated cost of ₹6,708 crore. Earlier this week, the Maharashtra cabinet’s infrastructure committee approved a 1.4-km extension of the Kamptee corridor beyond the Kanhan River into Kanhan town.

The projected extension is expected to cost around ₹310 crore, increasing the total project budget to over ₹7,000 crore, extending the corridor to approximately 14.4 km and adding a 13th station. The proposal is now awaiting final approval from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), after which construction on the extension is anticipated to commence.

Land acquisition for Phase-2 is also progressing, with over 50% of the required 9.04 hectares already acquired or processed. MahaMetro has received permission to begin work on nearly 80% of the necessary land parcels, including defence land, with officials suggesting that no significant land-related issues are expected to hinder the project’s progress.

MahaMetro has successfully completed the first balanced cantilever span over Uppalwadi, while similar critical structures over Pili Nadi on the Kamptee corridor, the Vena River on the Hingna corridor, and the railway crossing on the Wardha Road-Butibori corridor are nearing completion.
