NEW DELHI: As of now, almost 24 lakh households in India have been equipped with rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), as stated by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
In response to a separate inquiry, the minister highlighted that the scheme aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households within the residential sector by FY 2026-27, backed by a budget of ₹75,021 crore.
“As of December 3, 2025, the national portal has received a total of 53,54,099 applications, with 19,17,698 rooftop solar systems installed, benefiting 23,96,497 households,” he mentioned in a written response to the Rajya Sabha. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a demand-driven initiative, allowing all residential consumers with grid-connected electricity to utilize this scheme by applying on the national portal.
Naik further informed the House that, against the target of reaching one crore households with rooftop solar systems by FY 2026-27, 23,96,497 households have already been served. The installed capacity of rooftop solar under the scheme stands at 7,075.78 MW.
He emphasized that the ministry has established minimum technical specifications and standards for solar modules, inverters, and other components to ensure quality and reliability. Local discom officials inspect the installations, and vendors are required to maintain the systems for five years post-commissioning. The scheme incorporates robust checks to guarantee the quality of solar panels, and a third-party assessment is performed on at least 1% of the installed systems.
