MADIKERI: District labour officer T Kaveri reported that 12,629 workers are registered under the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Act in Kodagu district, with 9,971 males and 2,658 females.
The registration breakdown by taluks includes 3,069 workers (2,424 males, 645 females) in Madikeri, 4,146 workers (3,759 males, 387 females) in Somwarpet, and 5,414 workers (3,788 males, 1,626 females) in Virajpet.
Workers can register at the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board by calling the helpline at 155214. The board provides pension benefits for members aged 60 who have been part of the scheme for three years. Surviving spouses of deceased pensioners are also eligible for family pensions, Kaveri noted.
The disability pension program offers monthly financial support based on the degree of disability for workers impacted by occupational diseases or accidents. Additional benefits include professional toolkits and maternity aid for female beneficiaries during their first two deliveries. The initiative also covers funeral expenses and support through the Anugraha Rashi scheme for deceased beneficiaries.
Educational benefits include scholarships for the first two children of registered workers, covering from nursery to postgraduate studies. Moreover, medical support and accident compensation are available for cases resulting in death or permanent disability.
The medical subsidy encompasses various treatments such as cardiac procedures, kidney transplants, cancer surgeries, and more—including those related to the digestive system and bone health.
Additional provisions include marriage assistance for workers or their two children and maternal support, providing annual aid for preschool education and nutrition until the child reaches three years old, Kaveri explained.
