NEW DELHI: Following the recent Saket building collapse, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has instructed the MCD to compile a report on all illegal constructions throughout the city, officials reported on Tuesday.

A multi-storey structure in Saidulajab area of Saket collapsed last week, resulting in six fatalities. The building accommodated a coaching institute, cafes, and offices, while construction was reportedly ongoing on the top floor at the time of the incident.

“The Chief Minister has issued strict orders to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to conduct a thorough survey of buildings and pinpoint irregularities,” stated a senior official.

The MCD commissioner has been tasked with providing a report on previously identified unauthorized constructions as well, the official added.

As per standard procedure, the MCD seals properties or issues eviction notices for unauthorized construction, significant structural deviations, or the operation of unpermitted commercial activities in non-conforming zones, according to officials.

On Sunday, Gupta visited the collapsed site and directed officials to inspect nearby dilapidated and hazardous buildings, taking strict action where necessary.

She also mandated a magisterial inquiry, led by the district magistrate of South Delhi, to determine the actual cause of the incident and ensure accountability.

The Chief Minister instructed relevant departments to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the reasons behind the collapse.

Gupta emphasized that if any construction-related irregularities, safety violations, or administrative negligence are identified, stringent action must be taken against those responsible.
