Sambhajinagar to Tax Drain-Top Buildings, Crackdown on Sewage

CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Buildings erected over major drains and nullahs, despite having official clearance, will be subjected to higher property taxes as the municipal corporation aims to tackle persistent monsoon flooding and obstacles in desilting efforts. The Shiv Sena (UBT) Bhavan is among the structures that may be affected.

Municipal Commissioner Amol Yedage made this decision following an inspection of critical drainage areas at Kabadipura, Barudgar nala, Sambhaji Peth, and Roplekar Chowk, where he discovered several large constructions approved by the civic body built over nullahs. Officials confirmed that these buildings received corporation approval. Yedage then instructed to increase property taxes on such structures and to reassess the tax brackets, as these buildings significantly hinder nullah cleaning.

“Debris and waste often accumulate under buildings over nullahs, hindering effective cleaning operations. This blockage exacerbates water drainage issues during the monsoon season, heightening the risk of flooding,” stated Yedage.

This initiative is anticipated to impact numerous property owners, as many structures throughout municipal areas have been built over drainage channels.

During the inspection, Yedage also mandated strict action against the direct discharge of sewage into stormwater drains and announced a special enforcement campaign. “This practice causes sewage to mix with drain water, leading to constant contamination, unpleasant odors, and reducing the nullahs’ natural capacity. Particularly during heavy rainfall, this results in excessive water buildup in the drains, increasing the risk of localized flooding,” he explained.

He further directed officials to issue notices to properties discharging domestic or commercial wastewater into drains and to ensure they are connected to sewage treatment plants (STPs).

“The city’s drains should only carry rainwater. The direct discharge of sewage compromises their capacity and raises environmental and public health concerns,” the commissioner warned, emphasizing that violations would not be tolerated.

Yedage also visited the municipal health center in Kabadipura to address infrastructure deficiencies. At Roplekar Chowk, he instructed a contractor via video call to promptly bury an exposed water pipeline.

The commissioner cautioned that neglecting monsoon readiness, drain cleaning, and water management practices will not be accepted.
