Prayagraj Offers Tax Rebate Only for Resident Homeowners

PRAYAGRAJ: The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced that property tax exemptions will be available only to owners of self-occupied residential buildings occupied by their families. Properties that are rented out or generate income in any other way will not qualify for this exemption. PMC intends to begin verifying applications from eligible property owners within this month.

According to PMC Chief Tax Assessment Officer Sanjay Mamgai, property tax exemptions have traditionally been available for self-occupied properties older than 20 years. Property owners must submit applications, followed by on-site inspections by municipal teams to verify claims. Mamgai noted that the municipality is currently updating its software system to streamline the verification process. Once the update is complete, verified property owners will receive exemptions based on the data provided.

Mayor Ganesh Kesrawani stated that owners of buildings over 20 years old will receive a 40% exemption on property tax, while those with buildings younger than 20 years will benefit from a 32.5% exemption. He emphasized that self-occupied properties are defined as residences used by the owner and their family, not rented out for income during the year, and underscored that exemptions would be granted strictly according to these guidelines.

“Self-occupied old building owners will benefit from property tax exemptions, but the exact percentage of relief will be determined after verification by the municipal team,” added Kesrawani. Officials highlighted the importance of verification to ensure that only legitimate self-occupied property owners receive tax relief. Property owners are encouraged to submit their applications promptly once the software update is finalized.

This initiative aims to provide financial relief to long-term homeowners while ensuring compliance with municipal property tax regulations. It also seeks to maintain transparency and accuracy in granting exemptions, benefiting residents who have invested years into maintaining and living in their properties.
