HYDERABAD: Civic authorities in the Core Urban Region (CURE) are stepping up efforts to collect overdue property taxes as the fiscal year 2025–26 approaches its end, sending numerous notices to defaulters.

In the past 15 days, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC), and the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) have issued approximately 164,000 demand notices to property owners who have not settled their dues. Out of nearly 2.88 million property tax assessments in the city, around 40% remain unpaid for the current financial year.

Additionally, the total outstanding amount is alarming. While the overall demand is about ₹6,387 crore, including both current dues and arrears, only ₹2,186 crore has been collected so far. GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan has warned that strict measures will be enforced under the GHMC Act against property owners who fail to pay their long-overdue taxes.

“However, property tax collections in the CURE area—which encompasses GHMC, MMC, and CMC—have shown significant improvement. Last year’s total collections for this period were ₹1,984 crore, compared to ₹2,186 crore collected so far this fiscal year,” he noted.

Karnan urged property taxpayers to take advantage of the One-Time Settlement Scheme (OTS), which offers a 90% rebate on interest for outstanding property tax dues until March 31. Currently, property tax collections through the OTS scheme in the three corporations have reached ₹322 crore.

Officials have reported that reminders for property tax payments are sent via SMS every other day. “Warrant officers have been appointed at the circle level, and actions will be taken post-issuance of distress warrants. If necessary, the Revenue Recovery Act will proceed against major defaulters,” stated a senior GHMC official.
