KOLKATA: An audit of under-construction high-rise buildings in areas like Kolkata, Salt Lake, New Town, Dum Dum, Joka, and Howrah will commence on Monday. This was announced by Kolkata Municipal Corporation administrator Smita Pandey and Kolkata Police commissioner Ajay Nand during a meeting with Credai representatives on Sunday. They mentioned that the standard operating procedure (SOP) for inspection and safety audits will be finalized by late Sunday or early Monday.
The newly established SOP will allow for the audit of construction projects to begin promptly on Monday. Credai, the national body for leading developers, was briefed on the various aspects that the inspection framework will cover.
Key elements anticipated in the SOP include verifying land and site suitability, conducting structural and geotechnical reviews, performing independent audits on construction quality, reviewing materials and workmanship, and ensuring that approved designs comply with building codes and safety standards.
During the meeting, the administration emphasized that developers must prioritize the welfare of workers and laborers at halted construction sites due to the audit. The labour commissioner, also present at the meeting, urged Credai to consider providing financial support for daily wage workers affected during this period.
In response to concerns raised by Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh regarding the fate of approximately 25,000-30,000 daily wage workers, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari declared that builders would supply food to workers on-site during the closure.
