DEHRADUN: The Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) announced on Monday that the first construction and demolition waste processing plant in Uttarakhand will be established at Mothrowala, with the land secured and environmental clearance obtained.
Deputy municipal commissioner Tanvir Marwah confirmed that the pollution control board has approved the chosen site and the tendering process is currently in progress. “The project is expected to take at least four months to complete,” he stated. Currently, the civic body collects about 150 metric tonnes of construction waste monthly.
When asked if an official dumping ground for construction debris has been established, Marwah explained that waste is presently disposed of at the site designated for the processing plant. “Since a facility will be built there to process the debris, we are utilizing that location for dumping waste,” he added.
Officials disclosed that this facility, part of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) announced in 2024, will transform construction debris into reusable materials like bricks and blocks, aiming to mitigate dust pollution in the city.
Amidst increasing concerns over indiscriminate construction waste disposal throughout Dehradun, local resident Pooja Thakur remarked, “Debris is being dumped on footpaths and roads, obstructing pathways and causing issues for pedestrians. Some materials are even discarded in drains, causing blockages ahead of the monsoon.”
Mokhampur resident Naveen Chaudhary expressed concern about the environmental impact of improper debris disposal, stating, “Construction waste is contaminating rivers and mixing with regular garbage. This poses a threat to animals that scavenge through the waste for food.”
