Residents leave Signature View flats as DDA offers rent aid

NEW DELHI: Residents of Signature View apartment in Mukherjee Nagar are gradually vacating their homes after the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) began offering monthly rent assistance to those who have relocated.

According to the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of Signature View, families in three-bedroom apartments receive ₹50,000 a month, while those in two-bedroom units receive ₹38,000 monthly.

Amrendra Rakesh Singh, president of the RWA, stated, “By the end of August, around 200 families had vacated the building. Approximately 110 families are expected to leave before the court-imposed deadline of October 1.” The apartments are set for demolition after an IIT Delhi audit deemed the structure ‘structurally unsafe’. In the meantime, some residents have approached the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to request an extension of the vacating deadline to October 1, as they are struggling to find alternative housing on short notice.

The DDA released a tender on March 17 for the demolition, following the issuance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to assist residents and the RWA in finalizing the vacating date.

As stated in the tender notice, the selected agency will be responsible for dismantling the buildings and transporting the debris to an MCD-approved dumping site.

There has been no immediate response from the DDA regarding the situation.
