Residents demand Kirti Nagar-Palam metro extension to Dwarka Expressway

GURUGRAM: Residents in newly developed sectors of Gurgaon and Dwarka, Delhi, are advocating for the proposed Kirti Nagar-Palam Metro corridor to be extended to include Dwarka and the Dwarka Expressway. They cite increasing traffic congestion and inadequate public transport options connecting the two areas.

A joint delegation from the Dwarka Forum and the Dwarka Expressway Gurugram Development Association (DXP-GDA) met with West Delhi MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat, presenting their request for improved metro and bus services for commuters traveling between these regions.

Earlier this month, the Delhi government approved a new 9.9-km metro line connecting Palam and Kirti Nagar, which will feature six stations, including Saraswati Garden, Mayapuri Industrial Area Phase III, IITM Janakpuri, and Sagarpur. Interchange points will be available at Mayapuri and Palam.

The delegation highlighted that the rapid residential and commercial development along the Dwarka Expressway has significantly increased daily travel demands between Delhi and Gurgaon, while the public transport infrastructure remains lacking. They urged for the corridor’s extension to Dwarka and the Dwarka Expressway to alleviate congestion on major roads, such as NH-48, reduce vehicle emissions, and enhance accessibility to business hubs in Gurgaon.

Concerns were also raised about the growing pressure on the DMRC’s Blue Line and the Dwarka Sector 21 interchange station, which already experiences heavy passenger traffic during peak hours. The impending redevelopment of Bijwasan railway station and future multimodal integration around Dwarka Sector 21 are expected to further exacerbate commuter congestion.

C. K. Rejimon, a founding member of the Dwarka Forum, expressed that the request for a Dwarka-Gurgaon metro corridor has persisted for years but has not progressed beyond the planning stage.

“Since Delhi Metro commenced operations in 2002, followed by the Delhi-Gurgaon Yellow Line in 2004 and the Rapid Metro in 2012, the necessity of a Dwarka-Gurgaon metro has been clear. Yet, in the past 12 years, four Detailed Project Reports associated with this corridor have been rejected despite strong community demand,” he stated.

“Infrastructure projects like the Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II have enhanced road connectivity, but mass transit options remain overlooked. Even a minor extension from Palam to Dwarka and Gurgaon could significantly transform regional mobility,” Rejimon added.

The delegation also called for regular DTC bus services connecting Dwarka Sector 21 Metro station with sectors along the Dwarka Expressway in Gurgaon. “A dedicated DTC route would offer affordable public transport, enhance last-mile connectivity, and strengthen the link between Delhi and Gurgaon,” remarked Sunil Sareen, deputy convener of DXP-GDA.

Residents noted that the lack of direct metro and bus services has led commuters, students, and professionals to rely on personal vehicles and taxis, driving up travel costs and traffic congestion.

“Like many daily commuters, I often travel to the airport and primarily depend on cab services. Following the recent fuel price hike, cab fares have surged, placing additional financial stress on commuters. A trip, which used to cost around ₹500, now ranges up to ₹630,” said Bharat Nain, a resident of Sector 110 in Gurgaon.

During the meeting, Sehrawat assured the delegation that their concerns would be addressed with the relevant authorities and mentioned that the Airport Metro extension to Gurgaon is nearing final approval.
