CHANDIGARH: In a move to enhance accessibility, the Punjab government has revamped property registration documents by substituting 35 complex revenue terms with simple Punjabi alternatives, making it easier for the public to navigate land and property transactions.
Hardeep Singh Mundian, the Minister of Revenue, Rehabilitation, and Disaster Management, announced this initiative on Sunday. Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s leadership, the revisions aim to cultivate transparency, improve citizen engagement, and simplify government services.
He noted that traditional terms in property registration often left everyday citizens perplexed. Following the Chief Minister’s directives, a special committee was established by the Revenue and Rehabilitation Department to identify simpler terminology. Based on their recommendations, the government has opted for commonly understood Punjabi words to replace outdated technical and Persian or Urdu-derived terms.
“The goal is to eliminate unnecessary barriers for citizens trying to comprehend documents related to land and property,” Mundian stated.
The government has directed the Inspector General of Registration and all Deputy Commissioners to promptly implement these revised terms in property registration documentation. Key changes include: “Arazi” changed to “Zameen” (land), “Sakin” to “Vasneek” (resident), “Hiba” to “Daan” (gift), “Tarmeem” to “Sodh/Darusti” (correction), “Dakhil Kharij” to “Intkaal” (mutation), “Faut” to “Maut” (death), “Fard” to “Nakal Jamabandi” (copy of land record), “Bainama” to “Vikri Nama” (sale deed), “Mushtarka” to “Sanjha” (joint), and “Mansookh Karna” to “Radd Karna/Kharij Karna” (cancelled).
This initiative is part of the government’s broader mission to make official language more accessible and enhance public service delivery.
