Nagpur to Auction 149 Properties for Unpaid Taxes

NAGPUR: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is intensifying its efforts to recover long-overdue property taxes, targeting 149 properties for auction in an attempt to collect ₹3.29 crore. So far, it has successfully retrieved ₹95.3 crore through property tax warrants.

Currently, property tax arrears in Nagpur have exceeded ₹938.7 crore. A recent report highlighted that 261 prime properties are in default, each owing more than ₹25 lakh, collectively amounting to ₹442.34 crore in arrears.

As of September 2025, the property tax and assessment department has issued 10,042 warrants under Taxation Rule 42, covering outstanding dues of ₹95.31 crore. Out of these, 9,659 warrants worth ₹91.96 crore were served successfully, while 383 warrants totaling ₹3.36 crore remain pending execution. Additionally, ₹32.44 crore has been recovered from 4,581 property owners following the issuance of warrants. However, dues totaling ₹59.51 crore from 5,078 cases are still in various stages of recovery.

In an effort to recover ₹2.47 crore, 231 properties have been attached, with a shift in focus toward auctioning these attached properties under Taxation Rule 47(3).

The 149 properties identified for auction include 67 properties in the Mangalwari zone (worth ₹1.39 crore), 29 in Lakadganj (₹54.45 lakh), 26 in Satranjipura (₹13.63 lakh), 20 in Dhantoli (₹42.49 lakh), and 7 in Nehru Nagar (₹79.33 lakh). Other zones, including Laxmi Nagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Gandhibagh, and Ashi Nagar, have no auctionable properties, as recoveries in those areas are largely completed or under appeal.

Officials announced that public auctions have already begun in the Lakadganj zone, with 5 properties sold recently. In the upcoming days, efforts to combat tax defaulters will increase, especially targeting larger commercial and institutional entities. “We will closely monitor the auction process to ensure transparency and maximize recoveries before the financial year concludes,” an official stated.

Officials emphasized that recovering even a fraction of these dues could significantly enhance funding for crucial projects, such as the anticipated Nag River Pollution Abatement Project.

With rigorous enforcement, tax warrant recoveries, and the forthcoming auction initiative, NMC aims to enhance tax compliance and reduce the gap between arrears and revenue, ensuring that essential funds are available for infrastructure and civic services across the city.
