Nagpur fines 4,890 for blocking public spaces with material

NAGPUR: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has intensified its efforts against public space encroachments, taking action against 4,658 individuals and 232 builders over the past six months for unauthorized placement of construction materials on roads, footpaths, and vacant lots. This activity resulted in an average of one to two actions against builders every day from January 1 to June 30, 2025.

The civic authority has collected Rs1.16 crore in penalties during this period, targeting builders as well as citizens who left construction debris and materials in public spaces beyond the allowed time. Municipal regulations stipulate that such materials should be removed within 48 hours following construction or demolition. If not cleared after a notice, the NMC takes further punitive measures.

Under the leadership of municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, this initiative was executed across all 10 zones to maintain cleanliness and enhance pedestrian safety in Nagpur. Fines imposed included Rs10,000 for builders and Rs2,000 for individuals.

Of the Rs1.16 crore collected, Rs23.2 lakh originated from penalties against builders alone. Laxmi Nagar saw the highest number of violations, with 69 builders penalized a total of Rs6.9 lakh. Following closely was Dharampeth, with 45 cases and Rs4.5 lakh in fines, while Dhantoli recorded 33 builders fined Rs3.3 lakh. Other notable zones included Hanuman Nagar (25 cases), Mangalwari (32), and smaller amounts from Nehru Nagar, Gandhibagh, Satranjipura, Lakadganj, and Ashi Nagar.

Additionally, NMC penalized 4,658 individuals for similar offenses during this timeframe, collecting Rs93.16 lakh from them. Laxmi Nagar again led the way with 939 individual fines totaling Rs18.78 lakh, followed by Satranjipura (630 people, Rs12.6 lakh) and Ashi Nagar (587 residents, Rs11.74 lakh).

The civic administration has announced that this campaign will be ongoing to ensure that construction activities do not hinder public movement and to combat urban clutter.
