NAGPUR: The unregulated dumping of construction materials has turned the inner lanes of Deo Nagar into daily bottlenecks, causing significant inconvenience for residents, pedestrians, and motorists. Large piles of sand, gravel, bricks, and construction debris from various ongoing projects have occupied substantial portions of the already narrow roads, raising serious safety concerns.

A visit by TOI to the area revealed that many inner lanes are partially obstructed by heaps of unused construction materials piled alongside the road, with no barricades, warning signs, or clear demarcation. In several areas, loose sand has spread into the pathway, making it slippery and increasing the likelihood of accidents for two-wheelers and pedestrians. Vehicles often need to slow down or make sharp turns to navigate through these congested paths, causing frequent traffic jams.

Local residents noted that the issue has intensified over the past few months due to a surge in construction activities. “During peak hours, it’s nearly impossible to navigate these lanes. Schoolchildren, elderly residents, and even ambulances struggle to pass through. We’re not against construction, but basic safety standards are being overlooked,” said Surekha Tambat, a Deo Nagar resident.

Another resident pointed out that the lack of oversight has allowed builders to dump materials without restraint. “There’s no accountability. Even pedestrians have to walk on the road since the footpaths are blocked,” she remarked.

A representative from the Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) mentioned that action is taken whenever complaints are filed. “Once we receive a complaint, our teams conduct inspections and take immediate action, including issuing notices and imposing fines,” the source informed TOI.

However, residents argue that enforcement should be more proactive instead of being purely complaint-driven.
