NAGPUR: In the first quarter of the 2025–26 financial year, approximately 22.98% of the 8.36 lakh property owners in Nagpur took advantage of the rebate scheme introduced by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). This scheme offers a 15% rebate for online payments and 10% for offline payments. From April 1 to June 30, a total of 1,92,324 taxpayers contributed Rs 88.85 crore in property tax.
Among these, 96,993 property owners utilized online platforms—including the NMC website, the My Nagpur mobile app, and a WhatsApp chatbot—contributing Rs 49.92 crore. The remaining 95,331 taxpayers paid Rs 35.97 crore at zonal offices and special camps, indicating a greater inclination toward digital payment methods.
NMC commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari introduced the rebate scheme to encourage timely payments. The initiative, supported by an extensive outreach effort, significantly improved tax collection. Based on early trends, Chaudhari has adjusted the revenue goal from Rs 350 crore to Rs 400 crore.
This year’s tax collection marks a 20% increase from the Rs 73.13 crore collected in the same quarter last year, highlighting the effectiveness of NMC’s digital initiatives and incentive programs. Following the first quarter, NMC will continue offering rebates of 10% for online payments and 5% for offline payments until December 31, 2025.
To implement the campaign effectively, Chaudhari held multiple review sessions with the tax department. Additional Commissioner Vaishnavi B personally oversaw performance metrics across zones and inspected properties to ensure proper execution. Deputy Commissioner Milind Meshram coordinated the establishment of special tax camps in zonal offices, public gardens, housing societies, and schools.
Taxpayers were encouraged to utilize their Unique Property Identification Number (UPIN) to access their records and make payments swiftly. Many preferred the convenience of online payment, avoiding long queues and travel.
The civic body launched creative awareness campaigns, featuring popular characters like Gabbar Singh from “Sholay,” to engage the public. Slogans such as ‘I Am a Responsible Taxpayer’ were displayed across the city and shared widely on social media, generating positive public engagement.
A last-minute surge on June 30—the final day for rebates—resulted in a remarkable collection of Rs 5.88 crore in just one day. Several zonal offices remained open late to accommodate the influx. Among the ten zones, Laxmi Nagar led with collections reaching Rs 13.90 crore, followed by Hanuman Nagar at Rs 11.37 crore and Mangalwari at Rs 10.81 crore.
