MYSURU: Following the state’s decision to not pursue the establishment of the Greater Mysuru City Corporation due to insufficient population, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has submitted a new proposal to the government requesting an upgrade to grade 1 MCC.
The aim of the proposal is to elevate MCC to a grade 1 city corporation similar to the Hubballi-Dharwad City Corporation. This would involve merging the existing City Municipal Council and town panchayats located on the city’s periphery. The state government is expected to endorse the proposal.
A proposal was submitted to the state urban development department following directives from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Per Union government guidelines, a city corporation must have a minimum population of 2.5 million for an upgrade to a greater city corporation.
Over recent years, various organizations, stakeholders, and local representatives have advocated for this upgrade, hoping to merge the Hootagally City Municipal Council and the town panchayats of Kadakola, Srirampura, Bogadi, and Rammanahalli on Mysuru’s outskirts. Such actions are believed to enhance the city’s ability to secure more funding from the Union government, promoting tourism, trade, and job creation.
While even after the proposed merger, Mysuru’s population would still fall short of the 2.5 million mark, the state government has shown interest in advancing MCC to a grade 1 corporation like the Hubli-Dharwad City Corporation, which is now the second-largest in the state after Bengaluru’s BBMP.
MCC Deputy Commissioner (Development) Dasegowda informed TOI that the proposal has been submitted, and approval from the state government is anticipated soon. He noted that enhancing MCC to a grade 1 city corporation would facilitate access to additional funds and special grants from both the Union and state governments.
Chamundeshwari MLA GT Devegowda emphasized that this upgrade would significantly accelerate Mysuru’s development, benefiting trade and commerce. The four town panchayats and Hootagally CMC are part of his constituency. Devegowda insisted that the government urgently make this decision and hold elections for the newly structured civic body.
The tenure of the current MCC elected body ended on November 14, 2023.
