MYSURU: The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has commenced the establishment of a construction and demolition (C&D) waste processing plant. This facility, approved by the Mysuru Development Authority, will be set up on a 9-acre site in Hanchya-Sathagalli, adjacent to the Outer Ring Road, with an investment of ₹11.7 crore.

MCC has started collecting construction debris and is currently dumping it at the Hanchya-Sathagalli location. Out of the 500 tonnes of solid waste generated daily in the city, approximately 100 tonnes consist of C&D waste.

This initiative is pivotal for enhancing Mysuru’s cleanliness ranking, as part of the upcoming Swachh Survekshan survey. Teams from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs are scheduled to evaluate the city’s readiness for the survey in mid-March, which will include inspecting the plant and ensuring proper lifting, segregation, and processing of C&D waste from residential sectors.

Currently, illegal dumping of construction waste has been observed around water bodies, vacant land, and various public spaces, highlighting the city’s need for a dedicated facility. Despite MCC’s efforts to deter illegal dumping, incidents have been reported in numerous locations, including parks and stormwater drains.

To manage C&D waste, MCC has deployed 10 tippers for debris collection from various residential areas. A portion of the waste is now being directed to the Vidyaranyapuram site in addition to Hanchya-Sathagalli.

KS Mrityunjaya, the nodal officer for the Swachh Bharat Mission, confirmed that all necessary approvals for the C&D plant have been granted, and the corporation intends to begin processing waste at the site soon. The facility will have the capability to handle 100 tonnes of C&D waste daily.

The recycled materials, including concrete bricks and aggregates, will be utilized for road construction, industrial applications, and pavement blocks, Mrityunjaya added.

MCC Commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif announced that all preparations for the plant’s establishment are underway, and processing of construction waste is expected to begin within the next four months. Initial phases of work at the site have already commenced.
