NEW DELHI: Since June 1, the MCD has taken action by demolishing 94 properties and sealing 114 others as part of its initiative to combat unauthorized constructions, according to officials on Saturday.
This initiative was sparked by a tragic fire incident in Malviya Nagar that resulted in 21 fatalities.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) reported that it has demolished 12 properties and sealed 79 others, with enforcement teams operating across various zones under the support of Delhi Police.
“The corporation has ramped up coordinated demolition and sealing actions against properties violating building bylaws throughout all of Delhi,” stated the MCD, mentioning that these efforts were guided by directions from Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
In the South Zone, three demolitions and 18 sealing actions were carried out in localities including Said-ul-Azaib, Hauz Rani, Khirki Extension, Savitri Nagar, Khanpur, and Gautam Nagar.
Since June 1, there have been 41 similar actions in these neighborhoods.
This crackdown follows a devastating fire at the Flourish Stay bed-and-breakfast in Hauz Rani, which raised alarms regarding illegal commercial operations and fire safety compliance.
As per the statement, many properties targeted were involved in unauthorized construction or misused as bed-and-breakfasts and commercial spaces without following necessary regulations or safety standards.
“These strict measures serve as a serious warning to irresponsible property owners and builders: Any unauthorized construction or violation of safety regulations will lead to severe legal repercussions, including demolitions and sealing,” the statement emphasized.
Additionally, the MCD announced it has issued 158 notices since June 1 for unauthorized constructions, sealing, and demolition orders against properties breaching building bylaws or misusing their spaces.
The corporation is conducting a citywide survey to identify illegal commercial and residential properties in violation of building regulations, advising prospective buyers to verify the legal standing of properties before purchasing.
The civic body reiterated its commitment to ensuring compliance with the Master Plan, unified building bylaws, and the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, emphasizing public safety after recent tragedies connected to building infringements.
