THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The inauguration of the Karimadom Colony Housing Complex, which includes 128 newly built flats, took place on Monday. This marks a significant step in the city corporation’s initiative to provide affordable housing for the homeless.

The ceremony was led by Mayor Arya Rajendran, with Minister for General Education and Labour V. Sivankutty officially inaugurating the project’s first phase. The complex, constructed at a cost of Rs 27 crore funded by the corporation, is part of a broader initiative to create 200 homes in Karimadom.

The city has actively pursued various housing projects to make permanent homes a reality for those without shelter. Thousands of homes have already been completed, including 318 flats in Kalladimukham, 115 in Kannammoola Bund Colony, 22 in Rajajinagar, 432 in Karimadom, 542 in Mathippuram, and 12,380 under the LIFE project. Construction of an additional 700 homes in Mathippuram, Vallakkadavu, and Poonkulam is nearing completion.

The inauguration at Karimadom was attended by standing committee chairpersons Clines Rosario and Medayil Vikraman, Councillor S. Salim, and several city officials. Last month, the LSG department granted technical approval for an additional 105 housing units aimed at affected families. Costford, the appointed builder, is expected to commence work within a month following the agreement signing, with a completion timeline of one year. Each unit will cost Rs 21 lakh, with a total of 105 units as part of the Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) rehabilitation initiative launched by the city corporation in 2008.
