Indore District Sees Housing Stock Double in 15 Years

INDORE: The early findings of the 2027 census indicate a considerable rise in housing structures across Indore district over the past 15 years, alongside a notable increase in population.

The comprehensive house-listing phase shows that the total number of structures in the district grew from 6.49 lakh in 2011 to over 12.70 lakh, marking a net increase of 6.20 lakh units. The population is estimated to have risen from over 32 lakh in 2011 to approximately 44 lakh now.

According to IMC additional commissioner NN Pandey, the initial phase of the census is complete, demonstrating a substantial rise in both residential structures and population. “The census will conclude with a second phase starting in February next year,” he informed TOI, adding that the first phase has provided estimated population figures.

The most significant growth has occurred within the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) limits, where the number of houses has more than doubled from 3.98 lakh to 8.39 lakh over the 15 years, reflecting an annual construction rate of over 29,000 houses. This urban growth was partly driven by the incorporation of 29 villages into the municipality in 2014, moving their structural data from rural to urban tallies.

The rural sector also saw a growth of 71%, with housing units increasing from 2.50 lakh to 4.30 lakh during the same period.

Out of the 12.70 lakh structures surveyed in the district, 9.17 lakh are classified as residential properties, which includes 8.84 lakh fully residential units and over 33,000 mixed-use buildings where commercial activities coexist with residential ones.

With the house-listing now complete, enumerators are tasked with surveying locked properties. The head-count phase of the census is set to begin in February next year to finalize the district’s demographic data.
