Gurugram: 1,000+ Notices Issued for Illegal Commercial Activities

GURUGRAM: The Department of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) has ramped up efforts to tackle unauthorized constructions in stilt parking zones and illicit commercial activities in residential areas—major factors exacerbating the city’s parking woes.

DTP (enforcement) Amit Madholia noted that ongoing surveys in DLF phases, Sushant Lok (I–III), South City, Suncity, and Palam Vihar have uncovered widespread misuse of stilt parking spaces in licensed colonies, where residents frequently convert these areas into servant quarters, storage spaces, or extra living accommodations, thereby pushing vehicles onto already crowded streets.

“Notices are issued to property owners wherever illegal constructions are found in stilt parking areas. Should these structures not be removed in the specified timeframe, we will proceed with sealing and demolition,” he stated. He confirmed that over 1,000 notices and restoration orders have been sent in DLF and Sushant Lok alone. Many residential properties are also being repurposed for commercial use, hosting offices, salons, and boutiques. According to Madholia, these practices violate zoning regulations and worsen traffic congestion while further straining limited parking resources. Several such properties have been identified and notices issued.

While the current crackdown is aimed at licensed colonies, older areas of Gurgaon face unique challenges. Many municipal colonies have narrow streets with no in-plot parking options. Although this issue falls outside his immediate jurisdiction, Madholia suggested that establishing community parking zones on vacant government land or other available areas could be a solution. He also proposed implementing regulated roadside parking with proper markings and time-slot systems.

Additionally, complaints about unauthorized constructions in the parking basements of malls and group housing societies have been reported. Madholia urged Gurgaon residents to adhere strictly to building regulations related to parking.
