NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has reported the demolition of 82 properties and the sealing of 43 properties since June 1, following a building collapse and a fire in the city.

On Wednesday, a fire at a Hauz Rani B&B resulted in the loss of 21 lives, while a multi-storey building collapse in Saidulajab claimed six lives on May 30.

Officials stated that the crackdown on unauthorized constructions is in response to directives from Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

Following the B&B fire, a joint survey by the MCD identified 12 B&B guesthouses operating in violation of building bye-laws in the vicinity. Additionally, 32 properties in Saidulajab and 9 in Khirki Extension were flagged as violators.

“On Friday, five B&B guesthouses were sealed, including Green Residency, Venue Inn, Sky Inn, and Mi Cassa Inn. Subsequently, one property was demolished and sealed in Khirki Extension,” stated an official, adding that eight other properties in Saidulajab also faced demolition and sealing.

Further sealing drives are being organized against properties in Saidulajab and Khirki Extension.

“Since June 1, the MCD has also demolished 12 properties in the south zone, seven in Civil Lines zone, and eight in Narela Zone. The operation was supported by the Delhi Police and involved bulldozers for illegal structures removal,” the official elaborated.

To monitor the situations closely, these areas are under constant surveillance to identify any unauthorized constructions and B&B guesthouses that are violating regulations.

“The MCD will apply strict measures against any illegal constructions or activities. The demolition and sealing actions will intensify in the coming days,” the official added.

In Savitri Nagar, Sainik Farm, and Khanpur, demolition and sealing actions were executed against three properties, and three basements were sealed for operating libraries in Gautam Nagar.

The MCD has also issued over 150 notices for unauthorized construction, sealing, and demolition of properties for misuse.

“For their own safety, the public is advised against engaging in unauthorized construction or illegal activities, which violate the DMC Act-1957, Master Plan-2021, and Unified Building Bye-Laws-2016, as such actions could lead to demolition and sealing by the MCD,” the civic body cautioned.
