Cops Team Up with Karnataka-RERA Against Defaulting Builders

BENGALURU: In a significant step towards recovering over ₹750 crore in overdue payments from builders, the police department has agreed to deliver notices issued by the Karnataka Real Estate Regulatory Authority (K-RERA) to non-compliant developers. Homebuyers have repeatedly called upon K-RERA, the Revenue Department, and the state government to take firmer measures against builders accused of violating regulations, including delays in flat handovers.

Documents obtained by Bangalore Mirror indicate that a recent meeting focused on establishing collaboration between K-RERA and the police for issuing these notices. Chaired by the Chief Secretary, the discussion explored the possibility of sending notifications through local police stations. A letter from the Director General and Inspector General of Police confirmed the department’s commitment to facilitating the notice delivery process to builders.

Homebuyers have applauded this initiative from K-RERA and the police department, viewing it as a positive development for those awaiting compensation.

“After eight and a half years, action from K-RERA is finally here. This initiative will aid thousands of homebuyers and potentially recover penalties amounting to around ₹1,000 crore. We hope these directives are enacted without unnecessary delays to achieve the justice long overdue,” stated Sudhakar Lakshmanaraja, Founder of Digital South Trust.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the state government recently decided to establish a dedicated cell aimed at holding real estate developers accountable for ignoring K-RERA directives regarding homebuyer compensation. “The Revenue Department is responsible for enforcing RERA orders and reclaiming dues as arrears of land revenue. I support this new initiative,” remarked Dhananjaya Padmanabhachar, Sanchalak of the Karnataka Home Buyers’ Association.
