GHAZIABAD: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath officially handed over the first key of units created under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY) at a ceremony in the city on Friday. This marks the first unit distributed since the scheme’s announcement 11 years ago.
Introduced in 2015, the PMAY aims to provide affordable housing for economically weaker sections. The price of a flat is set at Rs 6 lakh, with contributions of Rs 2.5 lakh from the Centre, Rs 1 lakh from the state government, and Rs 2.5 lakh required from the beneficiary. Eligibility is based on an annual family income of less than Rs 4 lakh.
Initial delays in fund disbursement from both the central and state governments caused setbacks for the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA). Additionally, infrastructure development by the power department and UP Jal Nigam also lagged behind.
Now, with the Chief Minister’s handover of keys to Krishna Kumar, a beneficiary of the Madhuban Bapudham housing scheme, the GDA has officially commenced the possession of other flats. An official stated, “We are preparing to deliver more units now that the Chief Minister has inaugurated this phase.”
Under the Madhuban Bapudham housing scheme, the GDA has constructed 856 units, while 528 units in Newari are complete. However, 2,112 units across three other projects—Dasna, Noor Nagar, and Pratap Vihar—remain unfinished.
In addition, the Chief Minister laid foundation stones for 90 projects collectively valued at Rs 868 crore, including significant initiatives like the Hapur Chungi flyover and multi-level parking at Rajnagar District Centre.
The Hapur Chungi roundabout, which experiences traffic from all directions—Kavinagar, RNE, DM office, and the police line—will benefit from a new flyover aimed at alleviating congestion. The flyover, costing Rs 125 crore, will measure 1.2 km and consist of four lanes.
To address traffic issues at Rajnagar District Centre, GDA plans to develop a multi-level parking facility.
“This MLP will be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, allowing a private entity to design, construct, fund, and operate the facility while recouping expenses through user fees before transferring it to the GDA,” the official explained.
Upcoming projects also encompass new roundabouts, a 1.5 km Northern Peripheral Road, and the Hum-Tum Road, which will connect the city to Meerut, alongside the outer ring road.
