CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation has successfully collected ₹103.03 crore in property tax dues over the span of 14 days, thanks to a focused collection initiative across the city. This amount was gathered between July 3 and 16, during which many property owners proactively settled their tax dues. The efficiency of collections has surged by 145% compared to the same time last year, as reported by officials.
“The special property tax collection camp has been ongoing since July 3 and will continue until July 31. We will also organize additional intensive collection activities aimed at recovering long-standing dues. Out of 14,23,653 property owners in the city, 7,10,285 have settled their property tax without any outstanding arrears,” stated city revenue officer K. Mahesh.
However, the municipality still needs to collect ₹969.56 crore from the remaining 7,13,363 property owners. “We have been utilizing WhatsApp to send tax reminders, including QR codes for immediate payments, which has positively impacted collections. To assist property owners in avoiding penalties, we are also issuing reminders via pamphlets and newspaper advertisements,” the official added.
Officials are urging property owners to settle their outstanding dues to evade penal interest. Payments can be made through the corporation’s website, mobile application, WhatsApp service, tax collectors, and designated camps established in different zones and wards. The corporation encourages property owners to take advantage of these facilities and cooperate with the city’s efforts to deliver essential services on time.
