CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) has issued disconnection notices to 805 homeowners in Chandigarh due to unauthorized constructions too close to electric poles and overhead power lines. These violations include extended buildings, protruding balconies, boundary walls, and encroachments that directly impact electrical infrastructure.
After CPDL took over the city’s power distribution in February 2025, a thorough survey was conducted across multiple localities, including villages and colonies, to identify safety violations. CPDL officials reported that violations were found in various areas, leading to the issuance of notices in Sector 25, Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, Daria, Khuda Jassu, Khuda Lahora, Dhanas, Hallo Majra, Faidan, Mani Majra, Mauli Jagran, Mauli village, Vikas Nagar, Charan Singh Colony, Palsora, Burail, village Dadu Majra, Dadu Majra Colony, and Maloya.
These unauthorized constructions are against the Central Electricity Authority’s (Measures Relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations, 2010, and the Electricity Act, 2003. These laws require maintaining minimum distances between electrical infrastructure and surrounding structures to ensure public safety, helping to prevent electrical hazards and protect lives and property.
Residents are required to remove the encroachments. Non-compliance will result in disconnection of electricity supply without further notice, and legal action will be taken as necessary. The details of the notices sent to residents have been shared with relevant departments, including the Chandigarh Housing Board, municipal corporation, and police department for appropriate action.
CPDL officials have stated that additional notices will be issued to homeowners with unauthorized structures near power lines.
