NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project, covering a 6.032-km extension to enhance connectivity between major residential and commercial areas, officials announced.
This decision arose from a Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
An official statement noted that the project aims to provide seamless integration with the current Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro corridor.
In addition, sports infrastructure is expected to be developed in the nearby regions in preparation for the World Police Games 2029 and Commonwealth Games 2030.
Phase 2(A) will consist of four elevated stations and one underground station, and upon completion, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will span 77.63 km.
The five station names include Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport. The total estimated project cost, including interest during construction (IDC), is Rs 2,169.04 crore.
The Phase 2(A) initiative marks a significant step forward for the city’s infrastructure and represents a major expansion of the Metro Rail network, according to the statement.
“By connecting these essential areas through the metro network, Phase 2(A) not only improves connectivity but also fosters economic growth, tourism, and enhances urban mobility for residents and visitors,” it added.
The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2(A) is projected to create approximately 2,000 jobs during peak construction and around 500 positions during operation and maintenance.
