Bengaluru Authority to Launch in September

BENGALURU: The state government is finalizing preparations to launch the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) on September 2. This new entity will replace the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) with five municipal corporations. Draft orders for the new corporations have already been issued, objections have been considered, and a final notification is expected soon.

The historic BBMP headquarters, which has housed the city’s administration since 1947, is being renovated to serve as the Chief Minister’s office in his role as Chairperson of the GBA. The Bengaluru Urban Development Minister, acting as Deputy Chairperson, will work from the upgraded Deputy Mayor’s office.

The BBMP headquarters will serve as the central hub of the authority, accommodating departments related to revenue, climate action, and administration, while additional BBMP properties will be repurposed for municipal offices.

The five new corporations—Bengaluru East, West, North, South, and Central—will each have designated office spaces, which include the 12-storey Utility Building on MG Road, Govindaraja Kanaka Bhavan, Shakti Soudha in Yelahanka, and an anticipated facility in Banashankari. Administrative zones will increase from eight to ten under the BBMP, with current staff being allocated appropriately.

Revenue collection, covering property tax and outstanding dues, will be divided among the new corporations. Liabilities, estimated at around ₹1,800–2,000 crore owed to contractors, will also be distributed based on where the work was completed. A comprehensive report has been prepared, and the final government order is anticipated by the end of August.
