THANE: After years of planning, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is ready to begin commercial operations on Thursday, promising to reduce travel times, enhance tourism, and draw significant investments to the area.
The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the agency responsible for this ambitious aviation project, announced on Tuesday that the airport will manage 30 Air Traffic Movements (arrivals and departures) on its opening day.
The launch is expected to ease congestion at the existing Mumbai international airport, contributing to a more efficient multi-airport network in the region.
“The opening of the Navi Mumbai International Airport reflects the Maharashtra government and CIDCO’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development,” stated Vijay Singhal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of CIDCO.
“This landmark project exemplifies our dedication to modern infrastructure, inclusive growth, and global connectivity. It is a moment of pride for everyone who has supported this vision over the years,” he added.
The airport features a unique terminal designed to resemble a lotus, a project spearheaded by the Adani Group in partnership with Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL). This architectural marvel symbolizes India’s cultural heritage, merging sustainability with innovation, according to the release.
The airport’s launch is poised to spur regional economic development, benefiting residents of Navi Mumbai and nearby cities including Pune, Thane, Panvel, Raigad, and the Konkan region.
One of the project’s highlights is its strategic multimodal connectivity, which includes links to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), National Highways, suburban rail, and metro corridors.
On its inaugural day, major carriers like IndiGo, Akasa Air, Air India Express, and Star Air will operate flights, with IndiGo’s flight 6E 460 from Bengaluru landing at 8 am, followed by its flight 6E 882 departing for Hyderabad at 8:40 am.
