Mysuru Local Bodies See Spike in Property Tax Collections

MYSURU: Urban local bodies in Mysuru district, including the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), have seen a significant rise in property tax collection this financial year. This achievement is mainly due to the introduction of digital payment methods, as well as incentives like a 5% rebate for early payments and proactive door-to-door collection drives.

Officials noted that these initiatives have motivated property owners to comply on time, likely leading to substantial collections by the end of this month.

In a conversation with TOI, MCC’s deputy commissioner (Revenue), Somashekhar G S, mentioned that regular property tax review meetings every two weeks and early payment incentives have contributed to the increase in tax revenue.

The district, represented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has excelled in revenue mobilization among urban local bodies. The successful collection of property taxes, a key revenue stream, has enabled local administrators to implement various development projects this fiscal year.

MCC achieved 83% of its property tax collection target by the end of October, amassing ₹202.1 crore against a goal of ₹243.6 crore. It aims to reach 100% collection by the end of March 2026.

Furthermore, MCC has successfully collected ₹12 crore in property tax arrears out of a targeted ₹32 crore, with plans to intensify efforts to meet the arrears goal.

The civic body recorded a 91.3% collection rate for property taxes in the 2023-24 financial year and aims to surpass this during the current year.

Revenue officers attribute the extension of the 5% early payment rebate until mid-September as a contributing factor to this year’s remarkable tax collections.

Other urban local bodies, including Nanjangud, Hootagally, Hunsur, KR Nagar, Bannur, T Narasipur, Periyapatna, H D Kote, Saragur, Rammanahalli, Bogadhi, Kadakola, and Srirampura, have also reported impressive property tax collection figures this year, according to urban planning sources.
