Kalyan: The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has levied a penalty of ₹1 lakh against Regency Sarvam township in Titwala for allegedly failing to manage its solid waste, officials reported on Tuesday, according to Pradeep Gupta.
The civic body’s Solid Waste Management Department took this action following numerous complaints about the township’s malfunctioning garbage collection and waste processing facilities, which led to improper waste disposal.
Following directives from KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel and Additional Commissioner Harshal Gaikwad, Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Ramdas Kokare ordered an inspection. A sanitation officer and his team discovered that the township’s internal waste processing facility was inactive.
Under solid waste management regulations, large housing complexes and townships with environmental clearance are mandated to process and dispose of their waste responsibly. Officials indicated that the township had not adhered to these essential regulations.
KDMC officials stated that prior notices had been issued to the township, instructing it to restore its waste processing capability and ensure appropriate waste disposal. However, despite multiple warnings, management allegedly failed to follow civic guidance.
Ramdas Kokare told TOI that the township did not initiate the waste processing even after receiving notices. He also accused the management of permitting waste to be washed into a nearby river, leading to the punitive actions taken by the civic body.
“We allotted ample time for the township to rectify their situation. With no improvements and continued severe violations, we imposed a ₹1 lakh fine. A similar penalty of ₹15,000 was imposed on another complex, Cornor Stone, in Yogi Dham for breaching solid waste management rules,” Kokare said.
The civic authority has warned that strict measures will persist against housing societies and commercial entities that do not comply with proper waste management standards.
