AMBALA: The Haryana government has initiated plans to acquire over 6,600 acres of land as part of a significant urban expansion project for Ambala. This digital acquisition effort aims to create new residential and commercial hubs.

The Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) is allowing farmers from seven prominent villages to sell their land via the state’s e-Bhoomi portal. In contrast to traditional compulsory acquisitions, this approach permits landowners to voluntarily express their interest and propose their own “desired price.”

This initiative marks a major drive to modernize the infrastructure in this historic city, positioned at the border of Punjab and Haryana, by blending residential, institutional, and commercial sectors.

The Digital Marketplace for Land

During a meeting held at the Panchayat Bhawan, Ambala City subdivisional magistrate (SDM) Darshan Kumar detailed the acquisition process. Farmers have until April 30, 2026, to show their interest on the government portal, aiming for a total of approximately 6,668 acres. The villages involved are Patti Shekhan, Singhawala, Nasirpur, Kanwala, Matheri Jattan, Saunda, and Ugara, with the purchase method being based on voluntary consent via the e-Bhoomi portal.

“The government will evaluate the applications received and only proceed with purchases after securing the farmers’ consent,” stated the SDM, highlighting the intent for a transparent and equitable process.

Modernizing Ambala

The HSVP plans to develop these new sectors with “modern infrastructure,” which will include upgraded sewer systems, reliable water and electricity supplies, and improved road networks. This initiative is part of a wider state strategy aimed at reducing urban congestion and enhancing living conditions in secondary cities. Utilizing a consent-based portal, officials hope to mitigate the legal disputes and protests that have historically accompanied large-scale land acquisitions in northern India.

Next Steps for Landowners

To facilitate a smooth transition, the HSVP has set up support for farmers. Those having difficulties with the digital portal can visit the HUDA office in Ambala City. Additionally, a follow-up meeting is scheduled for landowners in the Ambala Cantonment area on March 17, at the Sector-34 Community Centre.
