Gurugram: 450 Shanties Demolished Along Golf Course Road

GURUGRAM: In a continued effort to address unauthorized encroachments along the Golf Course Road, district authorities conducted a demolition drive on Saturday in Saraswati Kunj, Sector 53, removing approximately 450 shanties occupying nearly two acres. This operation, assisted by police from the Sector 53 station, was carried out smoothly with no significant law and order issues, according to officials.

The enforcement teams indicated that these structures were erected illegally on designated land and were removed following prior complaints and notifications. This action aims to curb further encroachments and safeguard public land and access routes in the area.

Saraswati Kunj, established in 1983, has faced legal challenges and ownership disputes for over two decades. In 2004, it was reported that a cooperative group allotted around 9,000 plots despite a capacity of only about 4,000 houses, with only around 1,500 plots actually allocated so far. In 2016, the Haryana government established a commission to investigate these irregularities and identify original allottees. Since then, new construction has been restricted pending resolution of these disputes.

Despite these restrictions, unauthorized structures continue to emerge without approved building plans or necessary permissions. Officials noted multiple encroachments on government land and internal roads designated for public access.

In September of last year, the town and country planning department demolished nearly 350 shanties, along with two under-construction houses and a boundary wall in the colony. Similar demolition drives were carried out in June, targeting illegal houses and sealing constructions.

Authorities stated that Saturday’s operation was part of ongoing efforts. “Encroachments and unauthorized constructions in disputed areas are being closely monitored. We take action in accordance with due process to ensure public land and access routes remain unobstructed,” an official said.

As legal disputes over plot ownership and layout approvals remain unresolved, officials reaffirm that any construction in Saraswati Kunj without valid permissions is illegal and subject to demolition.
