PUNE: On Tuesday, the state government approved a proposal to raise ₹6,000 crore for land acquisition related to the Purandar airport project.
Principal Secretary of Industries, P. Anbalagan, informed TOI that the state cabinet has, in principle, approved the funding for the airport. A special purpose vehicle (SPV), already in place, involves CIDCO holding a 51% stake, with MIDC and PMRDA each holding 15%, and MADC holding 19%.
The SPV was established earlier to facilitate the greenfield airport project.
Anbalagan stated, “It has been decided to raise approximately ₹6,000 crore for acquiring land for the greenfield airport. While Hudco has proposed funding of around ₹3,000 crore, the government is looking into other financing options and will solicit commercial quotes to select the most advantageous option.”
The cabinet also decided that loan repayment will be the responsibility of the SPV partners according to their shareholding ratios.
Pune MP and Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, remarked that this greenfield project would significantly enhance development in Pune and western Maharashtra. “Improved air connectivity will transform industries, businesses, the IT sector, tourism, and agricultural exports,” he noted.
Mohol mentioned that with the Navi Mumbai International Airport, the Purandar airport would serve as a key alternative for Pune and western Maharashtra, improving both passenger and cargo handling capacity. He emphasized the project’s potential in strengthening international connectivity with possible direct links to vital global routes across the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia. “This will pave the way for new export opportunities, foreign investment, and global business prospects,” he added.
He further stated that the airport will benefit various sectors, including logistics, warehousing, MSMEs, and agriculture, as it enables quicker movement of goods and connects farmers directly to markets. The initiative is expected to create jobs, enhance infrastructure, and attract investments.
Mohol assured that both the Center and the state government would collaborate closely to ensure the timely completion of the Purandar airport project.
