Mysuru Civic Body Hits Record 88.4% Property Tax Collection in 2025

MYSURU: The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) achieved a record property tax collection rate of 88.4% by the end of December 2025, marking its highest performance to date.

In prior years, tax collection had never surpassed 80% by year-end. Officials credit this year’s success to new strategies, including the public disclosure of major defaulters—comprising individuals, commercial entities, and government bodies—on the corporation’s official website.

This measure, launched for the first time, has significantly increased compliance compared to previous years.

The published list featured top defaulters across both commercial and large residential sectors. After multiple notices and reminders, MCC implemented this public-disclosure tactic to enhance revenue recovery, contributing to its record-high property tax collection.

Other initiatives included collaborations with select women self-help groups for targeted tax collection in specific wards, door-to-door collection, SMS alerts for major defaulters, and an awareness campaign encouraging taxpayers to take advantage of a 5% rebate during the initial months of the financial year.

For the same period ending in December during the previous fiscal year (2024-25), MCC achieved a 79.06% collection rate, totaling Rs 198.8 crore. In the fiscal year 2023-34, the collected amount was Rs 164.2 crore.

Additionally, MCC dispatched SMS notifications to significant property tax defaulters about the potential consequences of unpaid taxes. There are 183,000 properties within MCC limits, making property tax a vital revenue source alongside trade and building license fees.

MCC Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Somashekhar told TOI that the various strategies, including listing major defaulters online, proved crucial for enhancing property tax collection this year compared to prior years. He stated that MCC aims for 100% property tax collection by the end of March for the fiscal year 2025-26.

“MCC should adopt additional strategies to facilitate tax revenue, such as educating taxpayers to treat property tax payments like monthly water and power bills,” suggested Mohan Kumar, a resident of Vidyaranyapuram. “Furthermore, efforts should be made to simplify the payment process to prevent taxpayers from having to navigate through multiple offices.”
