Delhi to upskill 1.2 lakh registered construction workers

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has initiated a skill training program for 120,000 construction workers as part of the newly adopted Code of Social Security, aiming to boost their efficiency and job opportunities, officials reported on Monday.

The Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare (DBOCWW) Board is responsible for the welfare of registered workers in the capital.

The training is crucial for construction workers, particularly as they represent one of the most vulnerable segments of the labor force, often migrating from various regions, mainly rural areas, to Delhi for work, stated a senior official from the Delhi government.

The Code of Social Security, enacted by the Government of India in November of last year, empowers the Building Workers Welfare Board to design skill development and awareness initiatives for registered workers.

The DBOCWW Board has started engaging training partners to skill the 120,000 registered workers over a three-year period, aiming to improve their employment prospects and living standards, the official mentioned.

These training partners will provide job-relevant training aligned with recognized standards, ensuring that workers acquire practical skills for better job opportunities.

The comprehensive training will cover various trades such as masonry, bar bending and steel fixing, shuttering, electrical work, carpentry, and painting & decoration, ensuring measurable outcomes and sustainable economic empowerment.

The program plans to train 40,000 workers annually, offering 120 hours (15 days) of training tailored to their job roles, with batch sizes ranging from 20 to 50 participants.

The training partners will supply the necessary infrastructure, study materials, stationery, and tools at the training venues.

Upon completion, trainees will undergo assessments and receive certification from the training partners. For monitoring, the partners will maintain a dashboard of training activities for updates to Board officials, spot checks, and audits. Training will be conducted both at Labour Chowks and on actual work sites across the city.
