AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has commenced rigorous enforcement of the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 for bulk waste generators across all city zones and wards, aligning with the Centre’s regulations and directives from the Supreme Court.

A civic survey has identified 5,500 residential societies, commercial complexes, and other large units in the initial phase as bulk waste generators, with that number anticipated to rise. Under the new rules, any unit with a built-up area of 20,000 sq m or more, daily water usage of 40,000 litres or more, or daily solid waste generation of over 100 kg will be classified as a bulk waste generator.

This category encompasses hotels, restaurants, religious institutions, government and semi-government offices, educational institutions, universities, large residential apartments, flats, societies, commercial establishments, and shopping malls. Every unit designated as a bulk waste generator must process biodegradable or wet waste on-site, while dry waste must be segregated and handed over to authorized recyclers.

The AMC has stated that this initiative aims to alleviate pressure on landfills, promote scientific waste management, and enhance environmental protection. They have warned that failure to process waste on-site or any breach of the rules will be regarded as contempt of the Supreme Court order. Offenders may face stringent action under the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 and relevant environmental laws.

An AMC official commented, “To make Ahmedabad cleaner, greener, and more environmentally friendly, we appeal to all institutions and citizens for cooperation. Under the slogan ‘Green Ahmedabad, Clean Ahmedabad,’ the corporation will ramp up citywide awareness and implementation efforts. Public notices will be distributed regarding this issue, and letters will be sent to all residential societies, commercial complexes, and other large units categorized as bulk waste generators. They will be required to implement the necessary systems within a year, failing which strict measures will be taken against them.”
