Zirakpur Tops Mohali in Property Tax Collection on OTS Deadline

MOHALI: On the final day of the Punjab government’s one-time settlement (OTS) scheme, the Zirakpur municipal council emerged as the leading performer in property tax collection within Mohali district, successfully collecting Rs 12.2 crore.

The OTS scheme, which commenced on July 1, allowed property owners to settle their overdue payments by paying just the principal amount, waiving off all interest and penalties if completed by July 31. The initiative saw an impressive turnout, especially on its last day, with the municipal council office witnessing an influx of 200 to 250 taxpayers daily.

This enthusiastic response propelled Zirakpur ahead of other municipal councils and corporations in the district. Officials attributed this success to effective planning and public engagement that motivated residents to utilize the scheme.

“The public’s response was overwhelmingly positive. We express our gratitude to the Punjab government for introducing the OTS scheme, which has significantly enhanced our revenue,” stated Jagjit Singh Judge, executive officer of the municipal council. He also mentioned that collections are anticipated to increase as the last-minute transactions are still being processed.

In celebrating this achievement, the council warned defaulters to take heed: “Those who neglected this opportunity will face legal consequences. We will begin identifying and taking action against repeat tax evaders,” Judge emphasized.

The success of this scheme is regarded as a substantial financial uplift for the council, enabling better planning for infrastructure and civic services in the expanding town.
