KOLKATA: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called on Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillors to learn from the heavy rainfall on September 23, emphasizing the need for adequate drainage in high-rise buildings.
The CM cautioned the councillors to heed recent experiences in both Kolkata and North Bengal.
“The water accumulation in high-rises stems from improper dredging by builders. Many do not even provide the necessary documentation. High-rise complexes should have designated parking, but if there’s no drainage system, how can we manage the water? This calls for thorough inspections post-construction to ensure all facilities are in place,” the CM stated.
Additionally, CM Banerjee announced job placements for the families of ten individuals who lost their lives to electrocution in Kolkata and nearby areas. “Ten lives were lost in Kolkata recently due to electrocution, with two more in South 24 Parganas. We have provided jobs to their families,” she confirmed.
Banerjee also highlighted the need to focus on rebuilding infrastructure in North Bengal. While efforts have been made to assist victims across four districts, she stressed the importance of providing support during festive times.
“Ahead of Diwali and Chhath Puja, we aim to aid the underprivileged. We have distributed relief materials three times already, including food, clothing, school supplies, and kitchen sets. Contributions towards rebuilding damaged infrastructure such as bridges, culverts, and schools are essential. Rebuilding is our primary focus now,” she added.
The CM commended her team for their extraordinary efforts in North Bengal. “Our police, civil service officials, civil defense teams, ASHA workers, fire services, power department, SPs, DMs, BDOs, and SDOs exhibited exceptional diligence in saving lives. I wish to recognize them with awards for their invaluable service.” She also announced a grant of Rs 10,000 for ASHA and ICDS workers to purchase smartphones.
