KOLKATA: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reassured residents of central Kolkata on Wednesday that their rights would be preserved following the redevelopment of dilapidated buildings. She emphasized that every legitimate resident would be documented and granted occupancy certificates, but urged caution regarding safety.
During the inauguration of Jagaddhatri Puja by the Posta Bazar Merchant Association, Banerjee acknowledged the past accidents in the area. “Through collective efforts, we’ve successfully reduced such incidents,” she stated.
“There are several crumbling buildings here. The KMC has issued notices, but residents are concerned about their living arrangements post-demolition. They must realize that staying in these structures poses a significant risk to their lives. Before relocating, all necessary information will be collected, enabling the government to construct new homes and issue occupancy certificates to ensure a smooth transition. Your right to housing will be maintained,” she assured.
Banerjee also called on traders to limit their use of plastic to prevent fire hazards. “Business owners must acknowledge the risks of stockpiling plastic and flammable materials. The consequences can be dire, leading to loss of life in addition to business losses,” she cautioned.
From the stage, she announced a project by WBSEDCL to move most overhead electrical wires underground in Chandernagore and urged Mayor Firhad Hakim to implement a similar initiative in Kolkata. “Ensure this similar project moves forward in Kolkata, as we have plans for it,” she added.
The Chief Minister addressed traders’ concerns regarding the port authorities. “You’ve informed me that the port asked you to vacate your spaces. I have directed law and labour minister Moloy Ghatak to resolve this issue, as this land belongs to us,” she stated.
