State OKs ₹290 crore estimate for Kolhapur Airport expansion

KOLHAPUR: The state government has sanctioned a revised administrative budget of ₹290 crore for the expansion of Kolhapur Airport.

The project is being developed collaboratively by the Airports Authority of India and the state government, which will provide funding for land acquisition necessary for extending the runway and constructing the Kolhapur-Hupari road.

Originally, the Kolhapur district administration estimated ₹212 crore for acquiring 26 hectares in Mudshingi and Tamgaon for the runway extension. Most of this land has been acquired, and compensation has been paid. However, due to a variety of land types—rain-fed, irrigated, and non-agricultural—the actual cost exceeded initial projections.

An official from the district administration stated, “We’ve submitted revised estimates to the government, and in October, the empowered committee approved the updated plan, which includes funds for both land acquisition and the Hupari-Kolhapur road construction.”

Additionally, the budget includes ₹4.80 crore for rehabilitating a residential colony. In total, 30.25 hectares are set to be acquired for the runway extension and road development. The runway, currently measuring 1,930 meters, will eventually be extended to 3,000 meters under a long-term plan, allowing for the operation of larger passenger and cargo aircraft.

Currently, Kolhapur Airport offers flights to Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, servicing around 500 passengers daily, including VIP flight operations.
