NEW DELHI: On Friday, the Supreme Court declined to consider a petition that challenged a Delhi High Court ruling stating that there would be no halt to the demolition of the Signature View Apartments in Mukherjee Nagar, New Delhi.

The petition was presented to a bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kumar and Alok Aradhe, seeking a suspension of the interim order issued by a division bench of the high court on September 17.

The Signature View Apartments are part of a multi-storey residential project initiated by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in 2010.

This complex consists of 336 flats—224 designated for higher income groups and the remaining 112 for middle-income groups—spread across 12 blocks.

Within two to three years post-allotment in 2010, and with possession given in 2012, issues arose when the exterior plastering began to fall off and cracks appeared in pillars.

In its September 17 ruling, the high court instructed the DDA to establish a camp office at the Signature View Apartments within two days. This office would assist residents with documentation and other necessary procedures as they prepare to vacate their flats.

“There will be no stay on demolition, which the DDA must carry out with minimal inconvenience to the residents,” the court stated.

The court also granted the residents permission to remove their personal belongings, including bathroom fittings and electrical items, when vacating their flats.

“Residents have until October 12, 2025, to vacate their respective flats. It should be noted that any delays in vacating will be at their own risk based on our previous order dated August 7, 2025,” the high court added.

In December 2024, a single-judge bench of the high court upheld a Municipal Corporation of Delhi order from December 18, 2023, which classified the buildings as dangerous.

The single judge affirmed that the DDA had the authority to demolish and reconstruct the buildings.
