AHMEDABAD: Residents of Adhikar Co-operative Housing Society in the D-Cabin area of Sabarmati have accused the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) of neglecting their complaints regarding a five-storey illegal building within their property, despite raising issues consistently for the past 18 months.
As per society officials, the building—which includes 24 rooms allegedly intended for renting as paying-guest accommodation—was erected without any approvals from the society, government authorities, or the AMC. Residents claim that work continued unabated even after the civic body issued notices and sealed the site.
Rakesh Kumar Mishra, the society chairman, expressed frustration over the lack of action, stating, “We have been pushing for demolition for over a year and a half. Yet, despite our repeated complaints, no demolition has occurred. This construction lacks any form of permission. We’re exhausted.”
In their most recent complaint submitted to the municipal commissioner on June 11, residents outlined the timeline of incidents. The AMC initially sent a notice on July 9, 2024, yet construction continued, leading to another notice on July 14, 2024. When no action was taken, society members went to the West Zone office in Usmanpura and lodged another complaint on April 10, 2025.
The AMC eventually sealed the structure, but residents allege that the seal was broken and work restarted. They claim they reported this to the estate officer, but no action followed. “When we approached the officer in person, they suggested we file a court case instead,” the complaint states.
Further online complaints made on May 27 and May 31 also resulted in no action, according to the residents. Meanwhile, they noted that the five-storey building has now been completed.
The society believes that the ongoing inaction is due to the “influence” of the builder involved, which has led to continued breaches of civic norms and distress among its members. AMC officials have yet to respond to the latest complaints.
