NEW DELHI: The Delhi government is set to mandate the use of recycled construction and demolition (C&D) waste in construction projects, as stated by Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood following a meeting with various departmental officials.
Officials from the urban development department, DJB, PWD, DDA, NDMC, MCD, power discoms, and DPCC were present at the meeting.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has instructed local bodies and public sector agencies to utilize C&D waste in accordance with the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules, 2016.
Minister Sood noted that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has set a target of recycling 9.85 lakh MT of C&D waste in Delhi by 2025-26, yet only 52,000 MT has been processed and used to date.
“C&D waste must be incorporated into both ongoing and future construction projects. I have directed that payments be withheld in cases of non-compliance with the established annual targets. We will conduct quarterly review meetings to monitor progress and ensure accountability,” Sood emphasized.
