KOCHI: The newly built twin housing complex in Thuruthy, developed by the Kochi municipal corporation under the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) scheme, has been hailed as a national model for resettlement projects by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Inaugurating the towers on Saturday, Vijayan emphasized that the Thuruthy apartment complex exemplifies cooperative federalism, showcasing successful collaboration between the Union and state governments, as well as local self-governing bodies.

The state government has launched several initiatives for the enhancement of Kochi and its surrounding regions, including the development of Kochi Metro, Cochin International Airport, Kochi Water Metro, Petrochemical Park, and Infopark, he noted.

“Numerous projects have been undertaken within the corporation’s jurisdiction, such as the long-stalled construction of the Kochi corporation’s office building, renovations at Ernakulam market, the Brahmapuram waste management initiatives, and the resettlement of P&T Colony residents. These efforts collectively embody the ‘Nava Keralam’ concept, which focuses on development and welfare,” Vijayan stated.

Vijayan also introduced the ‘Life Mission’ initiative, aimed at ensuring that no individual in the state lacks a basic necessity—a home. Under this initiative, homes are being provided to 400,000 families, with construction continuing. In Ernakulam district alone, over 40,000 homes have been allocated, with more than 33,000 already completed and an additional 6,000 in various construction stages. The new apartment complex in Fort Kochi is part of these projects,” he added.

Local self-government minister M B Rajesh presided over the ceremony, which was attended by Kochi Mayor M Anilkumar, K J Maxi, MLA, and District Collector G Priyanka. The new apartment complex is set to rehabilitate 398 families who were either homeless or residing in slums in the Mattancherry area.

Meanwhile, a dispute has surfaced regarding recognition for the project. DCC president Mohammed Shiyas and former mayors Tony Chammany and Soumini Jain stated at a press conference that the project was conceptualized during Congress rule. However, they claim the LDF is now taking undue credit for it.
