MOHALI: As civic body elections approach next year, momentum is building for the long-awaited expansion of Mohali’s municipal boundaries. The Punjab local government department is set to issue a formal notification on this by the first week of November.
The decision, which is currently pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, will extend the civic body’s jurisdiction to several rapidly developing areas. The next court hearing on this matter is scheduled for November 2.
The plan aims to include key residential and commercial areas such as Aerocity, IT City, and sectors 81, 82, and 86 to 94. Private developments like TDI City, Green Enclave, and Sector 66 Alpha, along with multiple projects in sectors 74-A and 116 to 119, which extend to the railway line and Bulk Market, are also expected to fall under the MC’s authority.
Once the expansion is formalized, Mohali’s civic map will undergo significant changes. The number of existing wards, currently 50, could nearly double, with an estimated 70 new wards being created.
A senior official stated, “We anticipate the notification in the first week of November. Following inclusion, we will begin restructuring the wards in consultation with all stakeholders.”
Officials noted that the expansion will lay the foundation for the upcoming MC elections, with a revised ward structure expected to be in place well before the elections.
Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu described the expansion as a response to long-standing civic demands. “Residents in these burgeoning sectors have consistently sought inclusion within the MC limits to access basic amenities and urban infrastructure. This step will integrate these areas into Mohali’s development framework,” he remarked.
Deputy Mayor Kuljeet Singh Bedi echoed this view, adding that the revision will ensure “equal civic services and effective governance” across both established and growing parts of the city.
In early 2022, the then Congress-led MC had already approved a proposal to expand Mohali’s boundaries, which was submitted to the local government department. However, the proposal stalled until social activist Ram Kumar appealed to the Punjab and Haryana HC.
Following his petition, the state government submitted an affidavit in December 2024 committing to a decision within six months—a promise that expired in May this year. The court subsequently addressed a contempt plea filed by Kumar, and the next hearing is set for November 2.
If the state upholds its recent commitment, Mohali’s municipal boundaries could soon reflect the city’s rapid growth, providing much-needed civic inclusion for thousands of residents living just outside its limits.
Proposed Changes
The proposal aims to include prominent residential and commercial hubs such as Aerocity, IT City, and sectors 81, 82, and 86 to 94.
Private developments like TDI City, Green Enclave, and Sector 66 Alpha, along with various projects in sectors 74-A and 116 to 119, are also expected to be incorporated into the MC’s authority.
Once the expansion is confirmed, Mohali’s civic map will be significantly modified, nearly doubling the current 50 wards, with officials estimating the creation of around 70 new wards.
This decision, currently awaiting approval from the Punjab and Haryana HC, will bring more rapidly developing areas under the municipal body’s jurisdiction.
The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for November 2.
