PUNE: The civil work on the Nigdi elevated Metro line within the PCMC area has achieved a significant milestone, having reached the halfway point.
Launched in August 2024, Maha Metro anticipates completing the remaining 50% of the project within the next 14 months, targeting a finish by December 2026.
This 4.5 km Metro extension complements the Swargate to PCMC route, featuring four stations: Chinchwad, Akurdi, Nigdi, and Bhakti-Shakti Chowk. Initially projected for completion in three years (36 months), the goal has been adjusted to finish within 30 months. Officials expressed optimism about meeting this timeline, citing no major land acquisition issues ahead.
The project’s viaduct runs along the old Pune-Mumbai highway. Metro officials revealed that work began between Pimpri and Chinchwad but has now progressed along the entire stretch. They noted that over 50% of the pillars are completed, and segment installation is currently underway between Pimpri and Chinchwad.
Regular commuters are looking forward to the Nigdi stretch becoming operational. Local resident Shantanu Shinde remarked that the extension will create a direct link between Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. He commented, “We didn’t understand why this work wasn’t included in the initial phase when the Metro was under construction for the Swargate to PCMC corridor. Many travelers are currently heading to the PCMC station for their Metro journeys to Pune. The Metro offers more frequent service during the day, benefiting commuters compared to local trains.”
Maha Metro officials confirmed they are in discussions with PCMC to allocate spaces for constructing stations and necessary entry-exit points, while traffic diversions have been put in place at specific locations to facilitate construction.
Maha Metro initiates service road repairs
Maha Metro has commenced filling potholes and repairing service roads in the Chinchwad area, responding to commuter complaints about the poor road conditions. Residents approached PCMC for immediate repairs.
