Pune: PMC Acts on 4,000 Bounced Cheque Cases for Property Tax

PUNE: The Property Tax Department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a warning to property owners regarding strict legal consequences for dishonoured tax payment cheques, as the number of such cases has been rising. Civic officials reported that over 4,200 cheque bounce instances have been recorded this financial year. Following persistent follow-ups, about 3,600 owners have settled their payments.

Now, the civic body plans to take legal action against the remaining 600 defaulters under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, which governs cheque dishonour offences.

Ravi Pawar, head of the PMC’s Property Tax Department, stated that despite numerous reminders, some defaulters have not complied. “We are now preparing to take action, and teams have been assigned to compile detailed information on these cases,” he noted.

With just 10 days left before the end of the financial year 2025-26, the administration is ramping up efforts to recover outstanding property taxes prior to the March 31 deadline. So far, PMC has collected approximately Rs 2,882 crore in property tax revenue, with dedicated teams deployed across various areas to expedite collections.

To facilitate payments, the civic administration has announced that all Citizen Facilitation Centres (CFCs) in the city will remain open without interruption until March 31. These centres will also operate on weekends and public holidays to assist residents in clearing their dues.

Officials emphasized that property tax payments can also be made via authorized online platforms, encouraging citizens to utilize digital channels for added convenience.
